Game Design
I found some of the articles remarkably interesting and informative. Before starting to enter "the games Industry", we should understand what the main goal is to create the games. Some of the authors mentioned in their articles that it is easy to create a game, even they brought some examples.
Games are for fun, entertainment. And But there are some type of games that can solve disease, and some games industries are working as a team with -Game Designer-Player-Scientist.
In the article -"I have no words & I must Design" by Greg Costikyan, he talked about the game main principals and mentioned the following opinions:
"Interaction has no game value itself, Interaction must have a purpose".
THE GAME IS PLASTIC
“The game” is an amazingly plastic medium. It’s adaptable to any and every technology, from the Neolithic to the high tech. And an amazing variety of games have been developed over the years...
- Board games,
- wargames,
- tabletop roleplaying games,
- computer and console roleplaying games,
- massively multiplayer online games,
- live-action roleplaying games
What does a player do in any game?
Some things depend on the medium. In some games, he or she rolls dice.
In some games, he chats with his friends.
In some games, he whacks at a keyboard. In some games, he fidgets with the controller.
But in every game, he responds in a fashion calculated to help him achieve his objectives.
Does every game have goals?
most games have an explicit win-state, a set of victory conditions.
But some games do not have explicit goals.
For example-SimCity, which been designed, as a software toy . SimCity itself has no victory conditions, no objectives; it is a software toy, it lets you choose what kind of city you want, and to struggle to make your city stable. You can try to build a suburban utopia, with commuters using cars and no big central district. You can try to build a centralized city with good mass transit and no heavy industry. You can try a million things – and it’s always interesting to play again, because you can always try something new. it allows players to choose their own goal.
character improvement is a key concept; through play, your character can become more powerful, gaining hit points, skills, spells, equipment, whatever.
In many games, power is achieved by killing things – that’s true in both Dungeons & Dragons and Ever Quest, for instance.
In some games, power is achieved by fulfilling quests or reaching story objectives, or by using skills whether they are used in combat or in some other way and the game players are motivated to improve their characters.
Game players preferred Interactive games, and every player has an objective to Win.
A game is an attracting platform which the players engage in the virtual conflict, crossing all the obstacles and achieving their goals.
And what is a Game Design?-by Ian Schreiber●
i- Games are an activity
- games have rules
- Games have conflict
- Games have goals
- Games involve decision-making
- Games are artificial. they are safe and they are outside of ordinary life.
- Games are form of art
The game players are playing against themselves or against another player. and this type of games can attract more video players.
the game is a competition and struggle
In a two-player,
head-to-head game,
your opponent is the opposition,
your struggle against him;
Majority of people thinking that game design is a video games only, but it is not. Game design is board games, card games, puzzles and so on. What's the difference between Video games and board games, In the video games we need to do some coding process, testing and debugging.
However, the video games are still on the top of Sales market, and the interest of it will never vanished.
Reading week also helped me to understand what I am exactly going to learn in this semester, and I got an idea what type of game I will create using Unity3D.
